My plan for the end of this year is to query my novel P2 and part of that process is finding comparable titles.
When you write a letter to an agent asking them to represent you, they want to know where in the market your book will fit so you need to do the research. Finding novels from the last couple of years that has similar themes, style, tone, structure, characters etc is not as easy as it sounds, particularly as you can't choose novels that have made it big (i.e: that everyone is talking about or been made into a movie).
If you've read my August Book Review, you will see I refer to a number of those reads as Comp Research. I've read a lot of books in August to try and find one or two that are similar to what I have written.
Ideally, Red, White and Royal Blue would be my comp BUT it's too big now. It includes, enemies to lovers, forbidden and LGBTQ+ romance. My character Luke is similar to Prince Henry as the grumpy/quiet character and Tyler is similar to Alex Claremont-Diaz.
I have been reading around those topics trying to find something that fits and have been researching other novels that may work, including sports romances, in particular Formula One, enemies to lovers in general, genre romance as well as trying to find an author who matches my style & tone.
This is a little insight into my new novel but also the querying process. Let me know if you want more about this process and how I get on. And if you have any book suggestions that may help, please send them my way!
